H.S. Girls Basketball: Frankston routs Oakwood in home tourney

FRANKSTON — The Frankston girls’ basketball team got off to a nice, easy start in its home tournament Thursday.

The Maidens opened up the Frankston Maidens Invitational Tournament with a 56-20 rout of Oakwood. Frankston moves on to face either LaPoynor or Hardin at 7 p.m. today.

Frankston dominated from the opening tip, never allowing Oakwood more than six points in any of the game’s four quarters.

The Maidens scored 21 of their own in the first quarter, effectively putting the game away there.

“Tonight was good, I thought we got out and ran,” FHS coach Christi Coker said. “We missed some easy buckets in transition, but I guess that’s just part of it. Hopefully they’ll fall.”

Coker played 12 players in the victory, routinely rotating in five players at a time.

Eight players scored for the Maidens, led by junior Chasity Cooper’s 16. Cooper at one point in the game hit six-straight field goals. She also had four rebounds.

“It’s very good because down the stretch we’re going to need those (role players,” Coker said of getting all of her players minutes. “Pressing the way we do, we’re going to get into foul trouble so it helps to have the ones on the bench have a little experience.”

Senior Mallory Winkler had 13 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Lateesha Gray had nine points.

Senior Amanda Allen added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds, and junior Autumn Kummer had five points and five rebounds.

Freshman Raven Bagley also had eight rebounds, six of them offensive.

Oakwood was led by sophomore Christina Hudson, who had 12 points and five rebounds. Hudson scored all of the Lady Panthers points in the first half.

Sophomore Janna Campbell had five points, while senior Shametris Owens had three.

Oakwood will face the loser of Thursday’s LaPoynor/Hardin game at 4 p.m. today.
