Neches ISD School Happenings for 4-1-07

The Palestine Herald

First Grade — Mrs. Goodwin's first graders love learning to use a ruler in math. It is so much fun. When asked what they liked most about measuring with rulers, here is what a few of the students said:

Josey — “I like to measure pictures and stuff.”

Abbigail — “It is easy to use.”

Hunter D. — “I like the numbers on our rulers and the colors.”

They also are reviewing rules of a sentence to make their stories better. (Capitals, punctuation, etc.)

Second Grade — Second-grade students in Susan Sekula's class donated a book to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. “The Tale of Despereux” by Kate Dicamillo is a story of light and hope told in four connected stories.

These students have just completed a math unit on measurement and are about to finish learning to write their capital letters in cursive. They read every day and have put many TAKS readiness skills into practice.

Third Grade — Mrs. Carroll's and Mrs. Cook's third-grade classes celebrated passing the Reading portion of the TAKS test. To reward the students for a job well done, Emily and Neil Tilton, parents of third grader Niolus Tilton, provided a healthy snack for the students. The third graders say, “Thank you, Mr. And Mrs. Tilton!” Mrs. Carroll and Mrs. Cook say, “We are so proud of you, Third Grade Tigers!”

Mrs. Macias’s Fourth-Grade Language Class — The students in fourth grade have been busy learning new spelling words. The students take a pre-spelling test on Wednesdays. Most of them make 100s on that day. Shukaila Calhoun and Bryley Autry were the top spellers of the week last week. The students, as well as their teacher, were very proud of Shukaila and Bryley!

Mrs. Kaudelka’s Science Class — Science students in grades 4-6 are encouraged to participate in extra-credit experiments the last six weeks. Students will follow the Scientific Method to prepare an experiment to present to the class. We are looking forward to the demonstrations!

BoxTops — Thank you for saving your Box Tops. At last count, our Box Top total was $639.60! Mrs. Goodwin is in first place with 2,204 box tops! Mrs. S. Brown is in second place with 1,112 box tops!

Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart — We would like to thank everyone that donated to Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart. Neches Elementary raised $3,417.08 for the American Heart Association this year!

Movie Night — Students, parents and teachers all enjoyed watching “Happy Feet” on Movie Night. Popcorn and drinks were served during the movie.

Dates to Remember — Tuesday, fifth grade Math TAKS; Thursday, early release at noon; Friday, school holiday (Bad Weather Day); April 17, Reading TAKS for grades 3, 4 and 6; April 18 Reading TAKS for grades 4 and 6; April 19, fifth grade Science TAKS.
