Cody Harris, victorious in the Republican runoff against Thomas McNutt, thanked supporters at a victory party at his Palestine office at about 9:30 p.m.
The District 8 state representative contest was for the seat held by Byron Cook. Cook, who stepped down, had endorsed Harris.
"The most important thing is that we showed the entire state of Texas that House District 8 seat cannot be bought by anyone,'' Harris told about 100 friends, family members, and campaign workers. "From the bottom of my heart, I think you so much. I look forward to having the honor of serving you all in Austin next January."
Harris still must compete in the general election, but in East Texas, the Republican primary is decisive.
