Family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the death of Dr. Don Carroll. An old school gentleman, Dr. Carroll, loving and devoted to all with whom he came into contact, dedicated his life to helping others.

Dr. Carroll is survived by his wife, Martha Ward Carroll; his children, Maurine and Kent DeShazo, and Lacey and Stanley Dorbandt Carroll; grandchildren, Jordan Dorbandt Carroll, Jay Brennan Carroll, Candace and William Carroll DeShazo, and Peggy Marie DeShazo. He is also survived by his loving step-children, Mike and Charlya Ward, Debra Pierce and John Ward; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephen Miller, Caroline and Ches Williams, Christine and David Nodine, Allison and Daniel McKay, Rachel Pierce, John Ward III, Benjamin Ward, Laurie Shea, Jennifer and Randall Ward, Mireya and Michael Ward and Marybeth Ward; great-grandchildren, Chesley Williams, Charlya Grace Williams, Hudson Miller, Seth Miller, David Shea, Michel Ward and Aerial Ward; nieces K. Lu Cowan, Connie Calloway, Janet Massey, Gay Roper, Ellen Boydstun and Tokin Wangerin; and nephews, John Stanley Carroll, Carroll Graser, Bob Carroll, Collins Carroll, Steve Roper and Danny Roper.

Dr. Carroll was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Dorbandt Carroll; his parents, Stanley and Florence Carroll; his sister, Louise Graser; brothers, Frank Carroll, Charles Carroll, John Carroll, Joe Carroll and Jim Roper.

Dr. Carroll was born on July 25, 1924 at Tennessee Colony, Texas to Stanley and Florence Carroll. After graduation from Palestine High School in 1941, he entered Texas A & M University where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets.

In 1942 during World War II, Dr. Carroll enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served the remainder of the war. When his service ended, he returned home, married Peggy Dorbandt, and resumed his studies at Texas A & M where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 and a Master of Science Degree in 1949.

Upon completion of his degrees at Texas A & M, Dr. Carroll entered medical school at the University of Texas at Galveston where he earned his medical degree in 1953. After an internship at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas, he opened a medical practice in Lampasas, Texas in 1955.

In 1969, Dr. Carroll moved his family, now including Dorb and Maurine, to Palestine, Texas where he practiced medicine until 1983. After losing Peggy in 1993, he spent time with his children and grandchildren.

In 1995 he married Martha Smith Ward, and they lived in Athens, Texas where he continued to practice medicine as a physician with the Texas Department of Corrections and the Texas Department of Mental Health. They moved to Dallas, Texas in 2006.

Dr. Carroll was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason.

A memorial service will be held in Athens, Texas at the First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, First United Methodist Church, 225 Lovers Lane, Athens, TX 75751 or to any charity of choice. Dr. Carroll will be missed by so many who knew and loved him.
