George Sullivan
George William Sullivan, 82, of Palestine was “like a good quarter horse who could turn on a dime” and give you change. But on September 16, 2009, after prolonged illness at Cartmell Home for Aged, he gave up his spirit to the Lord. A true friend and lover of animals all of his life, he adopted over 15 dogs and cared for them over the years on his 26-acre property in Brushy Creek.
Mr. Sullivan was born May 5, 1927, in Concord, Leon County, Texas to John Sullivan and Susie Estelle Collins Sullivan. A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. After separation from active duty, he joined the Army Reserves. His work then moved him to New Jersey, where he met and married Pauline Roemer, with whom he lived and raised a family until her death in 1988. After retirement from DuPont of 32 years, he returned to Texas in 1989. He later married his childhood sweetheart, Maggie Lee Moon, who passed away in January 2009. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Roy, and Lloyd Sullivan; and two sisters, Marie Nelson and Lucille Holt.
Survivors include his son, William Sullivan and wife Maria of Boothwyn, Pa.; daughter, Karen Hasler and husband John III of Mullica Hill, N.J.; brother, Carl Sullivan and wife Lucy of League City; sister, Margie Goff and husband Jim of League City; two grandchildren, Joey and Janine; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Justin; very special and loving niece, Lona Beck and husband Terry of Palestine; and many other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Chapel of the Air at Land of Memory Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Willmott officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Anderson County Humane Society, P.O. Box 63, Palestine, Texas 75802.
