Angie Flournoy

The Palestine Herald

Angie Flournoy, a resident of Palestine, died peacefully in the early morning of Nov. 4, 2009. She was born Dec. 23, 1917, to Henry and Sallie Rector, in the Blackfoot community, where she spent most of her childhood. She was married to Norman W. Koepnick from Dec. 6, 1941 until Sept. 4, 1957. The union produced two children -- a son Glenn, and a daughter Kathy.

During World War II she was a housewife in Houston, where Norman helped build ships for the war effort. After the war, they returned to Palestine where he started a sheet metal business and she continued being a housewife. With the culmination of the divorce, Angie became a licensed nurse to support herself and the children, working first for the local hospital, then as the nurse for Dr. Bascom Bentley’s private practice. Later she became a private nurse in the home of a local resident and concluded her employment working for a local nursing home.

In April, 1967, she married James Flournoy and eventually retired. With the pressure to provide support gone, she seemed to enjoy life more. Her passion was sewing. She made quilts, clothes for the grandchildren, and other things for the home. Her cooking was always worth a visit -- especially her chocolate pie. After Jimmie’s passing in 1988, she continued to live on her own until physical difficulties dictated she become a resident in a local nursing home in 2001.

She was predeceased by her husbands; her parents; her brother, Alton Rector; and sisters, Loretta Metcalf and Billie Bomar.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Mathis of Palestine; children, Glenn Koepnick and his wife Shirley of San Antonio, Kathy Koepnick and her husband Gary Esposito of Indio, Calif.; grandchildren, Monica Koepnick of Austin, and Jason Koepnick and his wife Joy of Marion, Iowa; and her great-grandchild, Dylan Koepnick.

Visitation will be at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Services will be at Bailey & Foster Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday with interment to follow in Land of Memory.
