Memorial services for Sumpter Latham, 74, of Palestine, are pending with Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mr. Latham died Wednesday at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

He was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Freestone County to Jim and Anne McIntyre Latham.  

Mr. Latham had lived here since 1977 and was a member of Lanely United Methodist Church. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran with 20 years of service and was retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with 17 years of service.

He was married 54 years to Bernice Black Latham and they had seven children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and one son, William Dwayne Latham.

Mr. Latham is survived by his wife, Bernice Latham of Palestine; four sons, Michael Harley Latham and wife Cheryl “Dee” of Palestine, Kevin Lee Latham and wife Tina of Florida, Allen Liston Latham and partner Kent Alvarado Jr. of Palestine, and Justin Lynn Latham and wife Katrina of Palestine; two daughters, Gwinlynn Bernice Thornton and husband Thomas of Palestine and Karen Deanna Bison of Palestine; 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
