Palestine Herald-Press

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend.

Grace Jenkins Hastings was born in Yantis, Texas, a small town in Wood County, but spent the majority of her adult life in Palestine, where she and her husband of 50-plus years, William (Willie) Hastings (1985) worked, served, raised their one son, Donald Ray (1986) and loved their daughter-in-law, Jean Spann Hastings Driver (2011) and their three granddaughters, Melissa Grace, Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) and Rebecca Jean.

After her son Don’s death and Jean’s remarriage, Grace spent her twilight years in the loving care of her “son-in-love,” Warren Driver, who faithfully ministered to her until her last day. Sharing in this labor of love with Warren was her nephew Tony Jenkins and her niece Sharlotte Holiman.

Grace is survived by Warren, Tony and Sharlotte, all three of her granddaughters and their husbands, Warren’s two children, Matt Driver and Mendi Head, 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a multitude of family and friends who loved her and whom she loved.

In Palestine, Grace was active in the First Baptist Church, and later, Trinity Church. She loved the Lord her God with all her heart, with all her soul and with all her strength, and she loved her neighbor as herself. Perhaps Grace’s most precious years were those she spent as headmaster and teacher of the kindergarten at First Baptist Church. Those students, now grown with children and grandchildren of their own, still speak fondly of the impact she made on their young lives.

What an amazing woman she was, and what a reunion she is having right now with those who have gone before. We love and will miss you, Nanny, but we, too, will be together again one day, in the reunion hall of the Father.

Her services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel in Palestine. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday before the funeral service at the funeral home.
