— Funeral services for James Shelby Dettor Jr., 81, of Palestine, were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Westwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Clayton officiating. Burial followed at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mr. Dettor passed away on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, in Palestine.
He was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Sardis, Mississippi, to Emily Josephine Dorr and James Shelby Dettor Sr.
Mr. Dettor served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved from Mississippi to Palestine in March of 1976. He was retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and was an active member of the Westwood United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Mr. Dettor was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jerry Dettor.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Dettor of Palestine; children, Lucy Monks and husband Fred of Youngsville, N.C., Emily McLucas and husband Bob of Austin, Norman Bisch of Vancouver, and Debbie Hughes and husband Kelly of Palestine; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kelly Hughes, Joshua McSwain, Chris Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Bob McLucas, and Fred Monks. Honorary pallbearers were Rodney Eaton and Phillip Thornton.
Condolence calls were from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
