Services for Sallie Hopper Kirkwood, 89, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Crawford Cemetery with the Rev. Craig Harris officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Kirkwood died Sunday at Palestine Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.
She was born Oct. 18, 1923 in Pert, Texas to George Washington and Alice Rhodes Hopper.
Mrs. Kirkwood graduated from Neches High School and married James Oren (J.O.) Kirkwood on June 3, 1942. They were married for 68 years.
She was well known for being an avid baker and a great seamstress. She made many a cake for local citizens and friends. She was known for making prom, formal, and wedding dresses for friends and her daughters. She was a champion candy maker and everyone looked forward to the holidays because of her candy and cakes. She was a second mother to many of her family and friends’ children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.O., in 2010; a daughter, Carol Kirkwood Lively; a son-in-law, Harry Moore; great-grandchildren, James Pitts, Seldon and Mason Studdard; and sisters, Cora Bell Goodman and Lorene Kirkwood; and sisters-in-law, Elee Shaver and Zelma Moore; and brothers-in-law, Hollis Kirkwood, J.D. Goodman, Collis Everitt, Gordon Muse and J.C. Shaver.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Moore of Burleson, Ann Platt of Elkhart, Lela Calloway of Palestine, James Kirkwood Jr. and wife Sherry of Palestine, Patsy Black and husband Gene of Elkhart, Mark Kirkwood of Elkhart, and Tammy Young and husband David of Tyler; and son-in law, A.D. Lively of Jefferson; grandchildren, Tracy Ragan of Lindale, Cynthia Barton of Bastrop, Michelle Congleton of Elkhart, Audra Wells of Huffman, Leah Glenn of Corpus Christi, Kirk Moore of Fort Worth, Kristy Kirkwood of Palestine, Susan Pullen of Early, John Studdard of Palestine, Gena Lohmeyer of Elkhart, Bradley Kirkwood of Elkhart, Maegan Black of Palestine, Caitlin Young of Tyler; stepgrandchildren, John Paul Riley and Kellie Reeder, both of Palestine. She also is survived by 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Everitt of Shepherd, Texas and Sam Muse of Elkhart; brother-in law, Robert Moore of Plano; and numerous nieces and nephews; and Beverly VanDeman, who Sallie thought of as one of her own.
Pallbearers are James Kirkwood Jr., Mark Kirkwood, Kirk Moore, John Studdard, Bradley Kirkwood, Gene Black, David Young, Bob Riley and Jerry Worley. Honorary pallbearers are A.D. Lively and James Sockwell.
Condolence calls will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster.
