Services for James Grady Martin Sr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Redic and Tommy L. Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow at Blackshear Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Martin died May 15 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.
He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Montgomery, Ala. to Albert Thomas Martin and Irene Elizabeth Jackson Martin.
James united with Friendship Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. at an early age. He received his education in Birmingham and served in the United States Army from 1950 until 1955. After leaving the military, James relocated to Jacksonville, Texas. He worked at Tyler Pipe in Tyler, Clayburn Tile and the City of Palestine where he retired in 1985. James united in marriage to Ethel Lene Lott in 1957.
On May 15, 2013 he left this earth on the wings of angels at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Thomas Martin and Irene Elizabeth Harris. He also was preceded in death by his stepfather, Robert Harris Sr.; brothers, Robert Harris Jr., Charles Martin; and one sister, Ester Pearl White.
Those left behind to cherish many sweet memories are: wife, Ethel Lene Martin of Palestine; sons, Ronnie Martin of Oklahoma and James (Bernadine) Martin Jr. of Palestine; daughters, Celeste (Walter) Gaston and Vera Watkins, both of Palestine; sisters, Emma (James) Dawkins, Tina (Earl) Ball of Detroit, Mich.; Shirley Hardnett of Jemison Ala.; Lillian Hicks and Irene Dorsey of Gary, Ind.; brothers, Sylvester (Rebecca) Harris of East Chicago, Ind.; David (Hazel) Martin, James (Patricia) Martin of Detroit, Mich.; Richard (Louise) Martin and Roger (Martha) Martin of Jemison, Ala.; and one special cousin, Virginia Dudley of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Victoria (Tiroyn) Gaston, Kimberly Gaston, Latonya (Derron) Gaston, Shun (Chasity) Martin of Palestine; Walter (Tiffani) Watkins Jr., Julia Martin of Houston; Angela (Ammiel) Powell of Huntsville; Larry (Patricia) Nixon of Fort Worth; Lee (Elicha) Nixon of Mesquite; Kristie White of Austin; Walter (Dorothy) White Jr., Justin (Sheomae) Tucker of Palestine; and Darrell Tucker of Wilmington, Ohio; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel.
