Services for Lillian “Penny” Miley Lester, 88, of Elkhart, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Dan Manuel officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Lester died Tuesday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 30, 1925 in Chicksaw, Okla., to Bert and Josey Clemmons Denton. The family moved to a small farm around Marlin, Texas, when she was 5 years old.
“Penny” attended school in Eureka until she was 16. At age 18 she moved to Waco, with her aunt Lessie and met her first husband (Don) of 51 years while working at a soda shop that he frequented while in the U.S. Army. A few years after the death of Don, she met and married George Lester. They were married Sept. 3, 1997. She saved pennies as a child and was given the nickname Penny by her husband in 1944. She is still known by many as Penny to this day. Penny loved to travel and spend time with family. She was a peacemaker and never met a stranger. All that knew her loved her. Penny attended Marlin High School and worked for Texas State Optical for over 20 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart.
Mrs. Lester was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Donald Mil; a son, Dean Miley; a sister, Alene Denton; and a brother, Donald Denton.
She is survived by her husband, George Lester of Elkhart; daughters, Jeanie Aden of Point Blank, and Lanell Perry and husband Danny of Magnolia, and Sandy Miley Sanders and husband Sherwood; brothers, Ray Denton and wife Donella of the Woodlands, and Troy Denton and wife Jean of Pasadena; and a brother-in-law, Sam Lester. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Donny Walters and wife Angie, Darlene Barringer and husband Darwin, Robert Miley and wife Stephanie, Elicia White and husband Troy, Charity Miley, and Darin Perry and wife Tiffany; 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews..
Pallbearers will be Michael Shoemaker, Danny Perry, Troy White, Jimmy Swonke, Darin Perry and Robert Miley. Honorary pallbearer will be Coleman Walters.
Condolence calls will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.
