Patricia Ann Funderburk

Palestine Herald-Press

Patricia Ann Funderburk lived a life of grace and cheer with the full heart of one who loved without condition. She was born on Oct. 8, 1935 in Hominy, Okla. to James A. and Lucille Bohannon and passed away peacefully at home with her family on Dec. 8, 2013.

Pat graduated from Kansas University in Lawrence, Kan. and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Upon graduating, she continued her education, obtaining her license in occupational therapy before coming to Houston to work for the Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research. At TIRR, she worked with those stricken with polio, burn victims and other young disabled patients, providing them not only practical assistance and training, but hope.

In Houston, she met Weldon Funderburk and they married on Dec. 9, 1961 and began a family together. Pat was a kind and patient mother and a loving wife who inspired her children to care for others in practical ways, setting an example for them as an ardent volunteer and joyful caregiver. She carried a casual loveliness into whatever environment she entered, always looking with intention for those who needed help, hope or a kind word.

She painted and created exuberant and colorful collages, enjoyed singing, traveling, and being a part of her children’s sports and school activities. Pat was an active member of Tallowood Baptist Church, making a number of lifelong friends and serving many years as a teacher in the Special Education Department, where she was a favorite of the students. She was a steadfast participant in the church’s prayer ministry and was also a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Houston Chapter from which she received an award of merit.

Pat was diagnosed with a form of early onset dementia from which she suffered courageously for over two decades, but will be remembered for relentlessly facing this adversity with a sweetness of spirit that exemplified her entire life and inspired those who loved her so dearly.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, J.A. and Lucille Bohannon; and her husband, Weldon Funderburk.

She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Becky; son, Greg, and his wife, Kelly; daughter, Susan; and daughter Laura and her husband, Mike Fullerton. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Nell Hearn and husband, John; grandchildren, Caroline and Luke, Hank and Charlie, and Emma, along with many nieces and nephews and loving and devoted friends.

The family wishes to thank her faithful caregivers, Judy Arroyo, Altagracia Caba, Araceli Castellanos, Ruth Hutchinson, Maria Carvajal, Elizabeth Hixand Kathryn Weeks. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home located at 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Tallowood Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Amazing Place of Houston, Tallowood Baptist Church, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
