Wanda O’Dell, died peacefully surrounded by family on June 9, 2014. She was born Dec. 19, 1928 to Lando and Eunice Hogan Langston in Palestine, Texas and was a lifetime resident of Anderson County.
She attended Slocum ISD and was salutatorian of her graduating class. She worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad for a number of years and retired in 1993 from J.C. Penney. Helping her customers find just the right item was something she enjoyed a great deal. She was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church for over 40 years. Gospel music was something Wanda enjoyed all her life. As a young girl, she was a member of the Fields Chapel youth choir. The choir would travel to other small churches in the area and would sing at revivals. She was very proud that their choir once had the privilege of performing before the Stamps Quartet at a revival. She was an incredible woman of strong faith and her family was her life. She dealt with her brief illness with great courage.
Wanda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always put her family first. She enjoyed antiques and the beauty of nature. Pretty flowers and birds were favorites and she was happiest when working outside. Her lawn was always filled with beautiful flowers and plants, many that had been passed down from beloved family members. Wanda always found a way to donate to a number of charities, especially those who serve children and veterans.
She married Charlie G. O’Dell on Sept. 12, 1952 and he preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her mother and father and brother, Rude Langston and sister-in-law, Ethel “Sandy” Langston, and great-nephew, David Kitchens. She is survived by daughters, Jan Miller and husband R.T. of Edmond, Oklahoma; Jean LeBlanc and husband Charles of Livingston and son Ronnie O’Dell and wife Kim, of Elkhart.
