Services for Mattie Ruth Cole, 76, of Lufkin, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at Redtown Missionary Baptist Church on Highway 7 with Ross Black and Robert Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
Mrs. Cole was born Feb. 7, 1937 in Anderson County, Texas, the daughter of the late Adell (Simpson) and Joe Bailey Coker. She passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Cole was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Nothing was more important to her than her family. She had a very special bond with her grandsons, Andy Brown and David Riley; and great-grandchildren, Grace and Riley Brown. She was a writer of poetry, songs, and books. She retired from the USDA as a food inspector.
Mrs. Cole was a fabulous cook. She was always smiling and was a very positive and generous person. She loved animals, fishing and traveling. She was a member of Redtown Missionary Baptist Church and very active in her church.
She is survived by her son, Paul Riley; daughter, Tina Brown and husband Doug; four grandsons; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; sister, Joyce Coker; brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Reba Coker; sisters-in-laws, Peggy and Wanda; one nephew, nieces, and other family members.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Russell Cole, in 2013; and four brothers, Gary Coker in 1944, Weldon Coker in 1993, Carrell Coker in 2004, and David Coker in 2008.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oakley-Metcalf Funeral Home.
