— A memorial service celebrating the life of Mike Stevens, 59, of Palestine, Texas will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 at Court Drive Church.

Mr. Stevens died Wednesday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 14, 1953 in Milam County, Texas, he was the youngest son of Homer and Grace Schafer Stevens. Mike graduated from Texas A&M University in 1976 with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. He taught special education in public schools for 10 years in Kenard and Crockett. Additionally, Mr. Stevens taught in the Windham School System for 20 years, retiring in 2008.

Mike was always an active member of his community. In Crockett, he was a member of Central Baptist Church, and worked with children and youth ministries. When he moved to Palestine he was very involved with in Palestine Community Theater, appearing in several productions.  

Since retirement, Mr. Stevens worked with local group homes and substitute taught in area schools.

Mike loved God, family, people, teaching, helping others, animals, and hot wings. You couldn’t talk to Mike without smiling.

He is survived by his wife, Suzie Jansa Stevens, of Palestine; stepdaughter, Rebecca Gates, of Stratford, Conn.; and his constant four-legged companions, Sebastian, Mama Dog, and Little Buddy. He will also be missed by his cousin-in-law, Sherri Price of Palestine, the clients he worked with, and a host of friends.
