Services for Robert Joey Allen Sr., 57, will be at 11 a.m. today at Smith Chapel Church of God in Christ with the Rev. Larry Allen, the Rev. Michael Allen, the Rev. Philemon Jackson, the Rev. Clyde Matthews and the Rev. Ira Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Allen died Dec. 2 at the VA Hospital in Temple.
He was born Feb. 6, 1956, to the proud parents of the Rev. McKinney and Geraldine Allen in Oakwood, Texas.
Robert accepted Christ at an early age and worshiped at Harrison Chapel Church of God in Christ. He attended Dunbar Elementary School and Oakwood High School where he was class president, member of the Beta Club, Future Farmers of America and served on the Student Advisory Committee. He also excelled in sports as a member of Oakwood High School's football, basketball and baseball teams.
In 1974, Robert graduated from high school and enlisted in the United States Army serving in Germany. He earned several awards as a rifle specialist and was honorable discharged in 1976.
Robert united in holy matrimony with Frances Henry on July 22, 1985. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, barbecuing and hosting family events at their home. In addition, Robert was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. McKinney Allen; sister, Sharon Allen; and stepson, André Hall.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his mother, Geraldine Allen of Oakwood, Texas; wife of 28 years, Frances Allen of Palestine, Texas; children, Robert Joey Allen Jr. of Houston, Texas and Marshia Allen-Auguston (Francois) of Plano, Texas; as well as grandchildren, Jayden and Christian Allen; stepchildren, Johnnie Mae Gray (Elbert Sr.) of Palestine, Texas and Tammy Riddle of Ennis, Texas; stepgrandchildren, Jasmine Clewis, Isaiah Mims, Elbert Gray Jr. and Renee Gray.
Robert also is survived by eight brothers and sisters: Margaret Ann Love-Matthews (Herbert) of Houston, Texas, Sinda Evans (Michael) of Houston, Texas, Larry Allen of Oakwood, Texas, Gabbriel Allen of Oakwood, Texas, Grayling Allen (Joyce) of Houston, Texas, Susan Jackson (Maurice) of Pearland, Texas, Michael Allen (Daphne) of Whitehouse, Texas and Crystal Allen of Houston, Texas.
In addition, he leaves numerous extended family members and friends to celebrate his life.
