— Services for Perry Reed, 97, of Palestine will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Tommie Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mr. Reed died on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Trucare Living Center, Palestine.

Perry Reed was born in Palestine, Texas on March 21, 1916, the youngest son of William Perry Reed and Lucy Johnston Reed.

He attended Anderson County schools and graduated from Palestine High School in 1934. He received his B.A. degree in English from the University of Texas in 1939 and his M.A. degree in English from Texas A&I University in 1951.

From 1939 to 1946 he worked for several governmental agencies and private companies, and in September of 1946 joined the faculty of the Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, Texas. During his 37 years on campus he taught English and history. While there he also served as associate headmaster, treasurer, and registrar. He retired from the school in 1983, returned to Palestine, and since that time resided at his home on South Sycamore Street.

Mr. Reed was highly regarded as an outstanding scholar and authority in English literature. He was also an authority in English and European history. Several of his students were inspired by him to a life-long interest in history and continued to contact him throughout his retirement years. He was an avid Bibliophile and amassed a large library. He was also a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Palestine.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Freddie Reed, J.A. “Jimmy” Reed, and J.M. “Joe” Reed; his sisters, Ethell Reed, Lucile Reed Eubanks, and Mary Reed Pickney; and a nephew.

He is survived by 16 nephews and nieces, and many great- and great-great-nephews and nieces.

Condolence calls will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be nephews, and honorary pallbearers will be Wilson Reed, and Dick Reed.
