Lee “Coach” Snider, 81, of Neches, passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2014.

He was born to the late John Henry and Jewel Snider, April 15, 1932, in Keechi, Texas.

He attended Keechi schools before the school district consolidated with Buffalo Independent School District in the late 1940s. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1949. He went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University with a degree in teaching and later received a Master’s of Science.

Lee married Joyce Marie Snider in June 1962. In 1958, he began his teaching/coaching career in Center Point, Texas. He spent all but two of his years in coaching at two schools, Oakwood and Neches. After 35 years of coaching basketball, he became twice retired. At the age of 67 he was the state’s most prolific basketball winner. He said, “If I had my life to live over, I’d do the same thing.”

Aside from basketball, Lee loved to fish, hunt and spend time with his family and friends. You could find him on Wednesdays at Richland-Chambers with his brother Luther. He was a father and friend to many throughout his life. He loved basketball and he loved kids, helping to raise many over the years.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Stephanie Snider; a sister, Viola Lee; brothers, Jessie Snider, Cecil Snider, Eddie Snider, William Snider, Carl Snider, Luther Snider, and J.B. Snider.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joyce Marie Snider; five children, Danny Jones and wife Debbie of Fort Worth, Debbie Jo Rinehart, Randy Snider and wife Kimberlyn, and Andy Snider and special friend Dana Wade of Neches, and Jennifer Kinder and husband Jim of Coppell; and special nephew, Hank Snider of Buffalo. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Jenny Holt, Crystal Davis, Eddie Rinehart, Casey Jones, Bradley Rinehart, Cole Snider, Katelyn Snider, Kelsea Jones, Jessica Kinder, Ryan Kinder, Jim Riley Snider, John Henry Snider, Kelsee Wade and Kamden Wade; four great-grandchildren, Keira Rinehart, Lily Davis, Jackson Rinehart, and Teagan Rinehart.

Pallbearers will be Casey Jones, Eddie Rinehart, Bradley Rinehart, Cole Snider, Ryan Kinder, Jim Riley Snider and John Henry Snider.

Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Neches High School Gymnasium with David Blackmon, Tommy Lee Calhoun and Coach Ott officiating. Burial will follow in Neches City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Coach Lee Snider Memorial Scholarship. Donations can be made through Austin Bank.
