William Newton Thetford, 77, of Grapeland, died Monday at Winfield Nursing Center in Crockett.
Mr. Thetford was born in Grapeland on Nov. 17, 1936 to Luther Howell Thetford and Era (Owens) Thetford.
He graduated from Grapeland High School in 1956. He attended Gale Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. majoring in Airline Management. He began his career with Trans Texas Airlines in Houston. He later worked for Texas International Airlines and retired in 1986 from Continental Airlines after a 40-year career. He was station manager in Galveston, Laredo, New Orleans and Austin. He also owned and operated Austin Baseball, a sports memorabilia shop in Austin for over 25 years. He was an avid sports enthusiasts and was the Boston Red Sox No. 1 fan. He served in the Texas National Guard.
Mr. Thetford lived in Leander, Texas over 40 years and in 2012 moved to his family farm in Grapeland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, W.H. McArthur; a sister, Mary Gene Thetford; and a nephew, Russell Brent Pennington.
He is survived by three sisters, LaWanda Pennington and husband Troy of Grapeland, Marjorie Spake and husband Roger of The Villages, Fla., and Virginia McArthur of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Thetford will be Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Bailey & Foster Funeral Chapel in Grapeland with the Rev. Randy Shipman officiating. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Refuge Cemetery, where six generations of his family are buried.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Ross Pennington, Scott Talley, Devin Vierus and cousins, Greg Brown, Howard Brown and Ralph Brown.
