Billy Ray Martinez

Funeral services for Billy Ray Martinez, 69, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at the United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. W.E. Shiflet officiating. Burial will follow at McKnight Cemetery in Cushing. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Billy Ray passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

He was born March 11, 1944, in Many, Louisiana to Frank M. Martinez and Lula Mae Yawn Martinez.  

He had lived in Anderson County for the past 20 years. He had worked many years as an engineer for LTV Aerospace in Dallas and retired as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Billy Ray was a member of the United Pentecostal Church. He loved music and enjoyed playing his guitar. He liked to dance, travel and fish and one of his favorite places on the lake was Martinez Landing. Billy Ray enjoyed life and loved to make people smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne Martinez and Cecil Martinez; and a grandson, Colton Denney.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Sarah Martinez of Palestine; three sons, Billy Ray Martinez Jr. of Red Oak, Mark Shane Martinez of Jacksonville, and Jeremy Denney and wife Lindsey of Bullard; two daughters, Regina Croney and husband James of Red Oak and Felisha Miller of Palestine; four brothers, Frankie Martinez of Grand Prairie, Daniel Martinez and wife Janice of Rose Pine, La., Donald Martinez and wife Jannel of Grand Prairie, and Carl Martinez and wife Kathy of Deridder, La.; two sisters, Ann Runge and husband, Jerry of Deridder, La. and Edina McKnight of Huntsville, Ark.; and 18 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Taylor Martinez, Bubba Thompson, Brian Johnson, Curtis Latham and Tim Wilson.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
