Services for Mel Pirtle, 73, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Paul Jones officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Pirtle died Saturday at his residence.
He was born Nov. 8, 1940 in Pittsburg, Texas to Guy and Eileen (Browning) Pirtle.
Mr. Pirtle retired from the Palestine Independent School District as the vocational director. He spent 40 years in the public school system teaching various subjects, holding administrative positions, and serving as vocational coordinator. After retirement, Mr. Pirtle worked as a realtor for Pace McDonald Century 21 real estate. He was also a founding member of the Court Drive Church of Christ and served as an elder for 20 plus years.
Mr. Pirtle was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Pirtle of Palestine; daughters, Jan LaStrapes and husband Kevin and their children, Matthew, Caleb, Adam and Ethan LaStrapes, all of College Station, Melissa Hollingsworth and husband Troy and their children, Sierra, Asia, Michael and Daniel Hollingsworth, all of Uncasville, Conn.; son, Jason Pirtle and wife Stacey and their children Lauren and Will Pirtle, all of Henderson, Tenn.; a sister, Surita Hatton and husband Phil of Lewisville; a brother, Paul Pirtle of Athens.
Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Condolence calls will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.
