W. L. Broughton

Walter LaRoy Broughton, 102, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013. He resided at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living in Palestine.  He was born Jan. 10, 1911  in Anderson County on  to Walter and Viola Walston Broughton. Walter married Ola Belle Clark on June 3, 1931 and celebrated 78 wonderful years together. 

Mr. Broughton retired from the Union Pacific Railroad as an Engineer in 1975. As a young man he worked many jobs around Anderson County including building the first paved road between Palestine and Elkhart. He also delivered laundry for the Sunshine Laundry and one of his notable customers was Bonnie and Clyde. He was an avid horseman and also a devoted "cowboy" with many days on the Texas State Railroad entertaining in the re-enactment clubs and also as a docent for the steam engines.  He was a member of the Texas Top Guns and the Texas Regulators. 

He was also very active in the Masonic Lodge, having served as Master of the Lodge No. 62 and as a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine Temple. Mr. Broughton was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, wife and son Roy C. Broughton. 

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Donald Lively, Hilltop Lakes; son and daughter-in-law, Davey and Hope Broughton of Munford, Ala.; daughter-in-law Carolyn Broughton, Shreveport, La. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is his faithful dog, Bo, who was his constant companion.

Masonic graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Cemetery with Chaplain Don Stanaland officiating.  Arrangements are being handled by Herrington Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Wayne and Robert Lively, Chuck Bishop, Hunter and Cliff Broughton and great-grandsons Scott Lively, Zack Morris, Charles Bishop, Nathon Loyd, Kolton Williams, Benjamin Broughton, Nicklas Broughton, Garrett Broughton, and Justin Broughton. Masons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive condolences from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dogwood Trails Assisted Living or Solaris Hospice.
