— Alton Downs Moore, 76, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 at Clarewood House after a year-long battle with lung and bone cancer.  

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Fern; his sons, Stephen and Blake; his brother, David; and his loving grandchildren, Ryley, Breana, Carson, Landon and Harrison; his many nieces, nephews and extended family.  

He was born in Nacogdoches, Texas to the Rev. William Rubal and Margaret Downs Moore. He lived most of his life in Houston.

Alton was a Sam Houston State University graduate, a CPA who started his career at Haskins & Sells then he worked for Columbia Gulf for 33 years until his retirement. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who dearly loved his family. He also served in the U.S. Army. He loved sports, mostly college football and the Texas Longhorns. In his retirement years, he loved to read books, watch movies, listen to music, cook, work puzzles, build model airplanes and cars, and especially making home movies and slide shows of family gatherings.

Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home at 3434 South Loop 256, Palestine, Texas.

A graveside service will be at 5:30 p.m. today at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Elkhart, Texas with Dr. Paul Clines officiating.
