Rev. Gilford H. Vaughn

Funeral services for the Rev. Gilford Harris Vaughn, 97, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Robert Lee and Robert Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery.

The Rev. Vaughn passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Cartmell Home for Aged.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1916, in Laneville, Rusk County, Texas to Simeon Levi Vaughn and Martha Viola Allen Vaughn.

He was saved in 1936 at the age of 20. He was called as pastor of Afton Grove, Jacksonville in 1940. He married Hazel Lee of Nacogdoches County on July 24, 1943.

During his 70 years of ministry, Mr. Vaughn had served a total of 25 churches in Texas and Oklahoma. Some of the churches he pastored include: Beacon Hill Baptist, Waco; Stone Heights Baptist, Henderson; Highland Park Baptist, Midwest City, Okla.; Leggett Baptist Church, Leggett; Damascus Baptist, Corrigan; Crossroads Baptist, Normangee; Ebenezer Baptist, Huntsville; and Mt. Cove Baptist Church, Atoy.

In 1998, Mr. Vaughn was honored as the oldest serving pastor in the BMA of Texas. After 15 years as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, Fairfield, he retired at the young age of 92.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Calvin Vaughn; and sisters, Jennie Harding and Georgia Scott; and son-in-law, Kenneth Adams.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Hazel Lee Vaughn of Palestine; daughters, Judy Croft and husband Wayne of Palestine, Brenda Hornaday and husband Jack of Magnolia, Ark, and Vicky Adams of Normangee; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Croft, Kevin Croft, Chris Adams, Brandon Adams, Matt Beckendorf and Andrew Woolfley.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
