Jean Hamilton Buckner, 91, of Prairie Village, died peacefully on Feb. 24, 2013. Jean was born in Palestine, Texas on Jan. 25, 1922, to John Carroll Hamilton and Leila Broyles Hamilton.
The Hamiltons moved to Shreveport, La. where Jean spent her school years and graduated from C.E. Byrd High School at age 16. She then attended Stevens College in Columbia, Mo. where she met her future husband Robert C. Buckner who was in medical school at MU. Jean completed her college education at LSU in Baton Rouge, La. in 1942 and received a degree in chemistry and pre-med. Jean was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at LSU and was also Louisiana State Archery Champion.
Jean and Bob married in Shreveport on March 13, 1944. The couple moved to Camp White, Oregon, until Bob was deployed to North Africa and Italy in 1944. Jean returned to Shreveport on her first wedding anniversary and in April had her first child Carroll Cave Buckner. When Bob returned from active duty in 1946, the family settled in Kansas City.
Two sons followed Carroll, Robert Hamilton Buckner and Jacob Maddox Buckner II. In addition to caring for her three children, Jean joined the Junior League and volunteered with the Red Cross. Jean also spent 20 years as a volunteer at Children’s Mercy Hospital working primarily in the plastic surgery clinic and the burn unit. Jean was also an avid gardener and loved all kinds of needlework.
Jean was predeceased by her parents; her brother, John Carroll Hamilton; her granddaughter, Erin Hamilton Buckner; her son, Robert Hamilton Buckner; and her husband of 69 years.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Carroll and her husband Terry McKenna; son, Jacob M. Buckner II and his wife Jan; seven grandchildren, Robert O. (Elizabeth) Houston of San Clemente, Calif., Holly M. (Larry) Jones of Menifee, Calif., Bonnie B. (Dan) Loyd of Porter, Brad (Amie) Buckner of Overland Park, Kan., Margaret (Jim) Stadler of Mission Hills, Kan., Annabelle (Tom) Allen of Leawood, Kan., Kelly (Preston) Fox of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 great-grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Buckner of Dallas.
Jean was beloved mother who will be sorely missed and will hold a special place in the hearts of her children forever.
