Billy Joe Mills, 82, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at Briarcliff Nursing Home in Tyler after a lengthy illness. He was previously a resident in Flint, Texas on Lake Palestine. He was also a longtime resident of Redland and Lufkin, Texas. He retired after 43 years of service with Champion Paper Mill. In addition to working at the paper mill, he worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker. His hobbies were wood carving, hunting, fishing and knife making.
Billy Joe was born Dec. 7, 1930 to Odell and Winnie Kennedy Mills of Redland, Texas.
Billy Joe was a 1948 graduate of Redland High School and a lifelong member of Redland Baptist Church.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; his first wife, Gerry Williams Mills; brother Delton Ray Mills; and sister Bobbie Dell Mills.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Harden (husband Mark) of Palestine; sister, Barbara Kirkland (husband David) of Lufkin; granddaughter, Kelly Harden; grandson, Jake Harden (wife Bonnie); great-grandson, Bradley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Bobbie Smith of Huntington; two stepchildren, Kerwin Smith (wife Tammy), and Sharon Berry; and stepgrandchildren, Trent, Zane, Jase and Jessa. He is also survived by Ann Taylor; stepson, Steve Carnley (wife Lori); and stepgrandchildren, Emma and Ava.
