Funeral services with military honors for Vack Solon Ivy Jr., 91, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be on Saturday at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m.
Mr. Ivy passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Sterling House of Palestine.
He was born near Fairfield, Texas in Freestone County on July 10, 1922, to Vack Solon Ivy and Ella Jewell Lee Ivy.
Mr. Ivy retired after 31 years with Dow Chemical Texas Division in Freeport, Texas.
He was drafted in the Army on Nov. 4, 1942. He was a PFC in the Anti-Tank Company 19th Infantry. He fought in the Pacific Theatre and made three Beachhead landings including New Guinea, South Philippines (Mindoro and Menden Isle), and Luzon. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Ivy was a courageous, kind and generous man. He believed in God, valued family, and loved his country – America.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice, whom he adored; his sister, Elma Ivy Williford; and two nephews, Ernest D. Williford and James Robertson.
Mr. Ivy is survived by one brother, Judson W. Robertson and wife Henrietta of Groveton; nieces, Shirley Williford McKinney and husband Ronnie of Elkhart and Barbara Robertson Hardison and husband Jess of Alamogordo, N.M.; nephews, Dennis Robertson and wife Sharon of Cold Springs and Gary Robertson and wife Becky of Angleton. He is also survived by numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
