— Funeral services for Betty Gene Fritz, 87, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Forrest Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mrs. Fritz passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living in Palestine.

She was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Winfred, South Dakota to Eugene and Opal Thompson Barry. Her father died when she was three days old and she was raised by her grandmother, Lillian Barrick and her aunt, Gladys Barrick.

Mrs. Fritz married William Henry Fritz on Dec. 7, 1941 and they operated and farmed a cattle ranch in South Dakota. She was also the bookkeeper for the family business.

Mrs. Fritz was an active member of the Ramsey Baptist Church in South Dakota where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Woman’s Ministry Leader and Girls Mission Group Leader. While living there she made three trips to Israel and for the following several years she traveled to various organizations sharing a slide presentation of her experiences there.  

Mrs. Fritz moved to Palestine in 1980 where she and her husband owned and operated Singing Wheels Skating Rink for 25 years. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she was active in the prayer ministry. She enjoyed writing and had a ministry of writing encouraging cards and letters.

Mrs. Fritz loved to travel and took many bus tours with groups from Palestine. She was also a member of the Sunshine Guild for several years, volunteering at Palestine Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 71 years, William; and son, Dean.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Hutson and husband Lloyd and Debbie Fritz-Vasquez and husband Ernest; sister, Pat Lauck and husband Dale; brother, Francis Barry; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

Pallbearers will be Lloyd Hutson, Ernest Vasquez Sr., Ernest Vasquez Jr., Michael Ruhl and Mike Bomer.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
