Mary Helen Ethridge Logan

Services for Helen Logan will be at noon Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Palestine with the Rev. Bruce Hay and the Rev. Brian Wharton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster Palestine.

Mrs. Logan passed away in Dallas on Nov. 13, 2012 at 5:14 p.m.

She was born Oct. 8, 1918 in Waco, to Ben and Mabel Ethridge. She attended North Texas Teachers College and received her degree from Stephen F. Austin.  She taught fourth grade in Palestine Independent School District for 20 years.

Family was her high priority along with her faith in the Lord.

Helen Logan had many special memories of her work with young people especially her 20 years of teaching fourth graders. One of her greatest joys was teaching children that books can be good friends. She loved playing in the church’s handbell choir, of which she was a Charter Member, for almost 20 years until age 90. She spoke often of her love for the First Methodist Church and her friends from church and Sunday School, the Women’s Circles, and Bible study groups. She enjoyed many years as a Charter Member of The Harvey Woman’s Club, and most recently enjoyed special friendships and laughter with the Women of Curves where she exercised almost daily for eight years until age 93.

Even when Helen moved to the Dallas area at age 93 to live in Assisted Living near some of her family, she made new friends and was known as a leader and full of fun and spunk. Her family and friends will miss her but know she is happily at home with the Lord.

The family extends their gratitude to the loving caregivers at Vitas Hospice-Dallas and Rambling Oaks Assisted Living-Flower Mound.

Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, John Reager Logan, a Palestine merchant; also her parents, Ben and Mabel Ethridge; her sister, Louise Barnett; her brothers, Marion and James Ethridge.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Saxton and husband James; son, Bob Logan and wife, Janet; grandchildren, Shelley and Paul Earnest, Cathy and Charlie Alexander, Jimmy and Suzy Saxton; great-grandchildren, Kylie and Taylor Alexander, Logan and Brandon Earnest, John and Samuel Saxton; many dear nieces and nephews and her four legged friend, Maggie.

Honorary pallbearers will be Stephen Bates, M.D., Michael Foster, Phil Jenkins, Henry Johnson, Larry Lamely, Burke Murdock, Cush Reeves, James Taylor,  Monroe Walker, and all the Women of Curves.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The First United Methodist Church, 422 S. Magnolia, Palestine, Texas  75801, phone 903-729-6205.
