William J. (Bill) Smith

Services for William J. (Bill) Smith, 89, of Palestine will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at the Evangelistic Temple with the Rev. Jason Harris officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Palestine City East Hill Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at the Cartmell Home.

He was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Daisetta, Texas to George and Mable Camp Smith.  

Mr. Smith joined the Army on Dec. 15, 1941, serving during World War II for 46 months active duty overseas through Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. He was part of the Third Infantry Division Artillery serving as a staff sergeant. He received a Theatre Campaign ribbon with three Bronze stars and one Bronze arrowhead, a Good Conduct Medal, a Croix De Giuer with Palm, a Purple Heart with a cluster, a 3rd Infantry Division Distinguished Unit Badge, an Army of Occupation Ribbon (Germany), a Victory Ribbon 7 overseas service bars and a Service Stripe Lapel button.

When he returned home he married the love of his life, Wynona Nash. They celebrated 65 years of marriage on Sept. 26 of this year.

He worked in the local tv cable industry for 25 years working his way up to manager. He later worked for Brooks Well Service, a division of Hunt Oil Company, until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of several civic groups including the Jaycees, the Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and President of the Palestine Retail Merchants Association for many years. He was an active member of the Palestine Noon Lions Club where he held every office including District Governor of 2-X3. He received the lifetime membership award in 2006. He was a longtime member of the Evangelistic Temple where he was currently on the trustee board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a baby son, Richard; and two brothers, Hugh and Ernest Brady Smith.  

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Wynona (Noncie) Smith of Palestine; his daughter, Jill Dagley and husband David of Palestine; grandchildren, Jennifer Huddleston and husband Adam of Canyon and Stephen Dagley and wife Natalie of Frisco; great-grandchildren, Noah, Maci, and Cody Huddlestone of Canyon and Ava Dagley of Frisco; and one sister, Margaret Arthur of West.

Condolence calls will be received at 10 a.m. on Thursday before the funeral service at the Evangelistic Temple.
