Frankston lodge to host vintage car rally

Our Town column

By MARY RAINWATER
The Palestine Herald

Frankston’s William Foster Masonic Lodge 312’s Second Annual Rally on the Square will be bringing between 100 and 125 vintage restored automobiles to downtown Frankston on Saturday, May 17.

The 2008 rally will open at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. First place trophies in 20 divisions will be given out along with four other special awards beginning at 2:30 p.m.

“Winners in the divisions and the ‘best of show’ trophy will be judged by the entrants who know and restore antique cars,” lodge Worshipful Master Charles R. Garner said. “Show spectators also will be given a ballot so they can vote on the People’s Choice Award.”

Others awards include: the Sheriff’s Trophy, given by Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor; the Mayor’s Trophy, given by Frankston Mayor James Gouger; and the Bobby Stephens Memorial Trophy, with a $100 cash award, that will be selected by the family of the late Bobby Stephens.

“Stephens was a longtime Frankston man who restored automobiles and helped many in this area rebuild their own classic cars,” Garner said.

According to Garner, the first Masons’ car rally in 2007 drew 75 vehicles and hundreds of spectators to the square in Frankston. The lodge has since moved the show date away from the first Monday festivities in Canton to increase participation.

“There will be concessions and food on the square during the rally,” Garner said. “A disc jockey, area resident Ray Parton, will be playing music from the 1950s and 1960s.”

Registration to show a vintage vehicle is $25 and entry forms can be attained at the Masonic Lodge, located at 300 N. Commerce in Frankston, or by contacting cr_jm_garner@netscape.com.
