A few thoughts on evolution, humanism and other nonsense

Kaleidoscope column

Part I

Let me be "up front” with you: I’m a believer (i.e., a Christian) by choice. No one coerced me, nagged me, bribed me, intimidated me, or even threatened to cut off my victuals if I didn’t convert. So why did I do it? Well, my answer is simple enough: after a sincere, honest appraisal of the Bible, God’s How To Manual, and comparing it with the alternatives I’d seen or read, it made more sense than anything else I’d heard. For example I’d read, and with an open mind, many of the various “theories of evolution” and learned, quite soon, that those ol' boys can’t even agree among themselves. Some espouse the Big-Bang Theory, which would have you and me believe that one day in outer space there was a gigantic cosmic explosion that flung debris in every direction. Eventually, we’re told, those bits of debris assumed round or oval shapes, cooled down, and settled into an orbit. Then, as millions of years went by, life began to sort of “happen” (by chance). Some evolutionists contend that some powerful cosmic force, such as a bolt of lightning, acted upon a bunch of lifeless matter and — voila! we had now a primitive form of life, that over a period of billions of years, evolved into Man. Now, my question is this: where did the gases strong enough to precipitate the Big Bang come from — or the lightning? Any reputable scientist will agree that there is such a thing as the Law of Cause and Effect; or (to phrase it simply), since something is — a well-ordered universe, amazing in design and purpose, along with plant, animal, and human life — then Something or Someone always has been. (Period!)

Any high school science teacher will verify that no one can walk into a lab with nothing and emerge with something he’s created from nothing. It would be well to remember that God was the Only One to ever do that. You may read the whole story in Genesis, chapters one and two, in the Bible. As to the origin of the earth and of man himself, even one of the foremost proponents of the Theory of Evolution, in commenting on the age of the earth, made this statement: “If there was ever a cataclysmic event, worldwide, then all our theories are "out of the window.”

My response: Sir, there was such an event. It was a world-wide flood, during the days of Noah. You may read about it in Genesis, chapters six, seven and eight, in the Book of Books, the Holy Bible. The fact that sea shells and fossilized forms of sea creatures have been found high up on the tops of tall mountains, should convince you as to the veracity of that remarkable story.

Come to think of it, one need not “park his brain somewhere” to be a Believer. Just approach The Book with an open mind. That’s exactly what John Clayton, a high school science teacher (and an atheist) did. The result? He’s now a brother-in-Christ.
