HAS program offered for Texas students

Our Town column

By MARY RAINWATER
The Palestine Herald

State Rep. Byron Cook, R-Corsicana, recently announced the launch of this year’s High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program for Texas students.

HAS will enable selected students to explore and become a part of NASA’s plan for space exploration, which will send humans back to the moon, then on to Mars and beyond.

After they utilize their math and science skills to complete 10 Web-based assignments during the school year, they will travel to Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston during the summer and use those same skills to help investigate options for sending humans to Mars along side their peers and real NASA scientists and engineers.

Eligible students must be: a U.S. citizen; a Texas resident; currently a high school junior; interested in science, math, or engineering; able to commit to a relationship with JSC, including a one-week residential experience during the summer; and have access to the Internet and e-mail (home, school, or public library).

The State of Texas, in partnership with JSC and the Texas educational community, developed the High School Aerospace Scholars in 1999 to encourage more students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Additional partners include the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, University of Houston System and Rotary NASA. More than 2,000 students from across Texas have participated in the program.

High school juniors interested in applying for the 2008-2009 program should visit the website at: http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov

Oakwood alum makes donation

Larry Allen, a pastor and Oakwood High School honor graduate, recently donated newly designed, built and color-stained library-style shelves as well as freshly painted walls and interior decor to the Oakwood-Dunbar Alumni library project.

The remodeled setting is located at 807 Academy Hill in the former classrooms of Allen’s fifth-grade teacher Wyrine Whitfield-Burton; the late music, history and English teacher Marie Henry-High; and the late A. King.

The setting also served as the Oakwood Elementary School library for several years.

Allen is founder and administrator of Spirit of God Ministries Inc., a Christian-based outreach ministry internationally. He also serves as pastor of the Miracle Church of Oakwood.

PHS reunion set

The Palestine High School Class of 1998 will hold its 10-year reunion at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Leggett residence for a cost of $15 a person.
