GOOG-411 offers free directory assistance

Computer Bytes

Finding a telephone number or business has never been easier thanks to “GOOG-411.” Part of the Google Empire, this service is fast and — yes, my favorite thing — free. From Goog-411 you can find and connect to any business directly from your hardline/landline, mobile phone or VolP (Voice over IP, a digital phone service utilizing the Internet instead of traditional telephone methods). To use this service you don't need an Internet connection, a computer, or even the keypad on your phone or mobile device. This service is voice-activated allowing you access from any location, at any time, from any phone (except pay phones).

For now this service is only available in the US and Canada in English. To get started, dial (1-800) Goog-411. Say where. Say what you are looking for and Goog-411 will connect you to the business. For now residential information is not available. If you are in need of emergency assistance, do not use this feature, just call 911.

If you are calling from a mobile phone, you can even get text messages and maps by saying “text message” or “Map it.” The Google map system is used for this service, so if you have a business you may want to update your Google map information or get listed there if you are not in the system.

This program responds to other voice commands like “go back,” “start over” and “help.” Everyone's voice is different so if you find yourself having trouble getting information, try this alternate method. For example instead of saying “Chez Maison” say “French restaurant.” You can then select from the list offered.

You should know limited information is collected; however, you can block your Caller ID before making any call using Goog-411. For traditional landline phones, you can use the *67 feature before making the call. On cell phones, you can block your identity through the phone menu or contact your provider for specific information. Aside from taking the aforementioned actions to block your ID, there are additional steps available to delete any information associated with your telephone number further protecting your privacy.

Use this cool program to get numbers while traveling, to eliminate cell phone information charges anytime, or locate hotels and restaurants while on vacation. Want to learn more? Visit http://www.google.com/goog411/index.html where you can view a short video and get detailed information.
