Trauma program manager gives tips to avoid falls

According to the Trauma Registry at Palestine Regional Medical Center in 2008, 86 percent of all admissions or transfers of patients 60 years old and older were caused by falls. In patients 75 years and older that percentage increases to 91 percent! The causes for all of these falls range from slipping or tripping on an item to losing their balance. Even older people who appear to be strong and well can fall. Whatever the cause may be, most of them are preventable!

Guess who turned 21?

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm legal. On Tuesday I turned one of, if not the most anticipated age for anybody growing up. 21.Aside from maybe 13 (woohoo I'm a teenager), 21 is the age when pretty much everything becomes available to you. I can now go to restaurants and order a beer, I can gain access to many of the smaller venues here in Austin, and I can just generally be a cooler person. The only thing I can't do is rent a car. Seriously though, 25? Who came up with that idea?

EPA up to no good again

About seven months ago I wrote a column about an insidious plan afoot in the Environmental Protection Agency.I wrote a story and followed it with an opinion piece about the EPA classifying greenhouse gas emissions as an endangerment to public health. Now, it looks to be getting closer to becoming real — another example of government overreach into the lives of everyday Americans.

Family still searching for missing dog, Fuzz

A local couple needs your help finding their missing dog.On May 28, Kenneth and Mildred Brown carried their cat Hobo and dog Fuzz to a local veterinary office. Kenneth had received an emergency call that his mother was dying and they needed to get to San Diego, Calif. The vet clinic was going to keep the pets in their kennel during the trip.Brown’s mother was still in stable condition when they returned to their Palestine home on the night of June 6. Unfortunately, Fuzz had escaped some time during the night before they arrived at the clinic the next morning.

Palestine’s historic properties are a bargain

We have written about the value in Palestine's historic properties before, but the May 25, 2009 issue of The Week featured Victorian era houses similar to those in Palestine that are for sale in various parts of the country. The weekly article features houses that are for sale around the country and always has a “Steal of the Week” feature. The issue's Steal of the Week is a five bedroom, 2-1/2 story 1890 Queen Anne in Stamford, NY near the Catskill Mountains for $289,900, which would be a good buy, particularly in New York.

Animal shelter worker’s creed put forth

Over the past few month, the employees BARC, The Humane Society have been accused by many people as being killers and murderers. We understand that our customers are raw with emotion when surrendering animals to the shelter. We (the staff) try to be gentle yet truthful with each person. However, the shelter staff is not at fault for the immense pet overpopulation problem Anderson County is facing. The overpopulation is a result of pet owners failing to spay or neuter. With this being said, here is the Shelter Workers Creed:

Paranormal questions I’m pondering right now

I think I'm going to see a psychic. Maybe I'll learn that I was a friend of Jesus in a past life.Let me clarify what set this plan in motion. I recently finished “Travels,” an essay collection by late author Michael Crichton, of Jurassic Park fame. Like the title implies, many of the chapters are about the author’s visits to exotic locales around the world, from living with indigenous tribes in New Guinea to climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Now that summer is here, we have many blessings to be thankful for and we have a few issues we need to be keeping up with. The following is just a few of the many phone calls we are receiving.

Give children the gift of today

Are you waiting for tomorrow to enjoy all the tasty, free crab you can eat?Joe’s Crab Shack, the restaurant chain, has a sign on the side of their buildings that says Free Crab Tomorrow. Sounds like a great deal doesn’t it? It’s just that, no matter when you go in there, it’s always today and never tomorrow and the elusive free crab is never served. See Joe’s knows a secret. He knows that tomorrow never really comes.

Don’t withhold students’ letter jackets

This letter jacket situation at Westwood has me puzzled. My children aren’t quite old enough to have earned a jacket, the oldest just going into high school this coming school year but in a different district. I guess I just don’t see what good is served by withholding something a child has earned.Kids love immediate gratification.

Doubt in God’s will can lead to trouble

Last week we left Moses at the waters of Kadesh, having been scolded by God for his pride and insolence.Moses was told to speak to the rock to bring water from it, but instead Moses struck the rock twice. While the water flowed, God was not happy.

Retreat to address importance of advertising

My best business advice is summed up in a favorite quote from marketing genius Ted Turner: “Early to bed and early to rise; work like hell and advertise.”During the budget process, ongoing, this advice helps keep me focused. Budgeting is all about setting priorities and making sure the tourism money is used in the most cost-effective ways to benefit Palestine’s economy through visitation. Advertising plays a huge role.

Ear care for pets

Hot, humid days are rapidly approaching as summer slowly begins. The season means finally diving into the neighborhood swimming pool, children on summer vacation running through the streets, and grass lawns growing at seemingly breakneck speeds. But summer could also mean painful ear infections for your pet. Heat, moisture and even grass clippings could cause serious problems for your furry friend’s ear canals.

Are you sun smart? Too much sunshine can be deadly

Summer and sunshine just naturally go together. Whether mowing the lawn, caring for the garden or attending a baseball game, every outdoor activity means exposure to the sun.A little sunshine is a good thing — too much can be deadly.
