PHS Theatre Department to present musical

Staff Reports
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE The Palestine High School Theatre Department will present Sandy Wilson’s musical comedy of the 1920’s “The Boyfriend,” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 and Oct. 27 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 28 in the lecture hall theatre on the high school campus.

Tickets for the production are $10 and reservations may be made by calling 903-727-2607.

The setting is – where else? – the French Riviera. Polly, an English heiress attending Mme. Dubonnet’s Finishing School, falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy. Recalling her father’s warning to beware fortune seekers, she poses as a working girl, unaware Tony is in fact the missing son of the wealthy Lord Brockhurst. Things get complicated with the unexpected arrival in Nice of Polly’s parents and Lord and Lady Brockhurst – but not to worry, a happy ending is in store for all.

The show’s many memorable roles include the flirtatious Mme. Dubonnet, her boy-crazy students and Polly (the role which turned Julie Andrews into an overnight sensation). With its catchy tunes, and winning sense of humor, “The Boy Friend” is a sparkling, tongue-in-cheek 1920’s romp.

The cast will feature not only students but several PISD faculty members as well. Curriculum director Rhonda Herrington will portray Mme. Dubonnet, PHS choir director Sam Odom as Percival Browne, PHS math teacher Judy Hobbs as Lady Brockhurst and PHS theatre director Eric J. Cates as Lord Brockhurst.

The students of the finishing school and their boyfriends will be played by PHS students; Shauna Martin, Kelsey Smith, Carli Smith, Tabitha Hobbs, Diane Jones, Rachel Dean, Polly Campos, Jessica Stilwell and Teri Klauser. Also Jordan Staples, Andrew Todd, Taran Gaston, Kyle Carter and Caleb Morrow.
