Palestine FFA teams place in LDE event

Recently the Palestine FFA Leadership Development Event teams competed in District contest against at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens. The results are:

● 4th Place (out of nine teams) — Job Interview. Senor Jana Richmond had to write a cover letter, resume, complete a five-page job application, conduct both a telephone and face to face interview and write a follow-up letter in order to be hired for a part time job.

● 4th Place (out of 10 teams) — Junior Ag Skills—PVC Pipe Repair. Marc Garner, Kevin Looney, Greg Albright, Jack Rogers. Eighth graders competing against high school freshmen and sophomores. These four students had to teach and demonstrate a shop skill — PVC pipe repair — to a panel of three Ag teacher judges. They had to learn and recite a script and perform the skill from memory.

● 6th Place (out of 12 teams) — Junior Chapter Conducting. Amanda Taylor, Ashley Lomax, David Gean, Cody Multer, Dustin Handorf, Jena Chavez, Shane Gregory. Using proper Parliamentary Procedure these seven students had to conduct a meeting, including minutes, treasurer’s report, two committee reports and four parliamentary procedure problems in under 20 minutes. Once again, eighth graders competing against high school freshmen and sophomores.

● 7th Place (out of 14 teams) — Radio Broadcast. Sarah Price, Megan Brown and Morgan Ray. These young ladies had to research, write and deliver a 6 to 8 minute radio quality broadcast over a timely agriculture topic. Their topic was the “Urban Feral Hog Problem in Palestine.” They are scored on information presented, clarity of voice over a speaker, background noise and ability to keep the audiences’ interest.

● 8th Place (out of 15) teams — Junior Creed. David Gean. Gean had to recite — from memory — all five paragraphs of the FFA Creed (254 words, total) and then answer three thought questions about the creed’s meaning. He was judged on accuracy of statements, voice quality and emotion. Once again, an eighth grader competing against high school freshmen and sophomores.

● 8th Place (out of 14 teams) – Junior FFA Quiz. Elizabeth Sorley, Hannah Diaz, and Jessica Gallegos. These ladies took a 100-question exam over the FFA Manual, history and parliamentary guide. Once again, eighth graders competing against high school freshmen and sophomores.

This contest is the equivialent of playing your entire athletic season in one shot, FFA advisor Donald Reed said. Only the top two teams from each district (five districts) advance on to Area (10 areas) and the top two at area advance to state.
