Slocum ISD School Happenings for 2-25-07

The Palestine Herald

Hot Air Balloons — Mrs. Missildine’s sixth graders recently completed their studies of hot air balloons by flying hot air balloons that they constructed themselves. The students first researched the history of hot air balloons and learned the basic principles of flying them. They learned how to make their own hot air balloons and discovered which weather conditions were ideal for flying them. They worked well together and discovered that there are many aspects to consider when building and flying hot air balloons.

Visiting the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility — On Feb. 14, Mr. Parker’s Physics Class took a trip to the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine. The students watched a presentation in the Operations Control Center about scientific ballooning and its purpose. Then, the students had the opportunity to view CSBF’s launch vehicle, Tiny Tim, and ask questions. CSBF launches large, helium-filled balloons into space, which study elements such as the formation of stars and cosmic rays.

The employees travel all over the world for different science groups to launch these payloads and to provide support during the launches.

Baseball and Softball — Varsity baseball plays at Douglass at 4 p.m. Monday. Junior varsity will play at 4 p.m. Tuesday at home against Diboll. Thursday through Saturday, boys baseball will play in the Zavalla Tournament while girls softball will play in the Tyler Tournament.

Texas Public Schools Week — Texas Public Schools Week will be held the week of March 5.

RPTE Tests — The RPTE tests will be given March 6.

Spring Break — Spring Break is the week of March 12.
