The Lady Mustangs defeated Westwood 81-35 at Panther Gymnasium behind shooting 65 percent from the floor.

“You could tell they have been practicing since the first day of school,” head coach Wade Holder said. “They are a good shooting team, but we left a lot of shots open to where they only needed one to two passes to get the shot off.”

The Lady Panthers got 19 points, five rebounds and one block from senior center Richelle Anthony.

Anthony hit 6-of-14 field goal attempts and shot 54 percent from the free throw line, making 7-of 13 free throw attempts.

“Richelle looked good underneath going against their 6-foot-2 center,” Holder said. “She is going to have to do that every night for us.”

As a team, Westwood shot 35 percent from the field, hitting just 9-of-26 field goal attempts, but shot 50 percent from behind the three-point arch and 60 percent from the free throw line.

Twenty-five turnovers from the Lady Panthers were too much to overcome. Holder said the mental mistakes come from only having a week of practice.

“We have had to do a lot of learning in a short period of time,” he said. “Their pressure forced us to make turnovers and we were trying to create things instead of letting the offense come to them.”

Martins Mill opened the first and second quarters with huge runs. The Lady Mustangs started the first quarter with a 13-3 run. Anthony made the Lady Panthers’ first field goal of the game and hit a free throw to give Westwood its only points in the run. Martins Mill outscored Westwood 23-6 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 13-0 run and forced 18 Lady Panther turnovers in the first half. Westwood got into foul trouble before halftime with four fouls from senior guard Magen Douglas and three from Keriana Gainer.

Martins Mill had the game put away at halftime and took a 53-14 lead into the locker room.

“They are way ahead of us at this time of year,” Holder said. “With a little more time and practice we could play them a lot closer.”

Westwood improved from its troubled first half with just seven turnovers. Douglas caught fire in the fourth quarter and went perfect from behind the three-point line and free throw line, going 2 for 2 from each for eight points. Westwood outscored Martins Mill 16-13 in the fourth quarter.

“We had a lot of people out of position tonight,” Holder said. “It is still early in the season and our shooting is going to get better and we will continue to get better.”

Gainer added five points and two rebounds, while freshman Chasity Yarbrough and senior guard Kaysie Ives each had two points.

The Lady Panthers will be back in action Monday at pre-season No. 8 Brownsboro. The freshman match is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
