CORSICANA — After more than a week of no live action, there was no way to simulate the kind of speed the Westwood Lady Panthers saw Monday night.
With a blazing fastball, Waco-Robinson’s Hannah White completely shut down the Westwood offense in the Lady Rockets’ 4-0 win in the Class 3A-Region III bi-district action at Corsicana’s softball field.
The game was postponed from May 1 due to the University Interscholastic League’s concern over swine flu. Once the two teams got back on the field, Westwood (19-10-2) seemed no match for the Robinson right hander.
White threw a one hitter, striking out 17 batters and facing the minimum of 21 batters.
Westwood’s only base runner came in the fifth inning when Zoey Perry had an infield single tat landed in front of second base. But Perry was caught stealing on the next pitch.
White started the game by striking out the first nine batters. Westwood twice tried to bunt for base hits in the fourth, but both times the Robinson defense made the play.
Westwood senior Sumer Davis suffered the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked one.
Robinson (16-7) got the first three batters on in the first inning and scored its first run on a sacrifice fly and the second run on a single up the middle.
The Lady Rockets added single runs in the third and fifth innings on solo home runs by White and Molley Cooper.
Westwood shortstop Jazmine Hicks made several fine defensive plays. She caught a low line drive in the first inning to save a run, made a diving catch on a short pop up in the middle of the diamond in the second inning and took away a hit in the fifth inning when she ranged to short left field to make a leaping catch over her shoulder.
