Westwood offense comes to life against Crockett

CROCKETT — The ailing Westwood offense got the perfect remedy Friday night — the Crockett defense.

The Westwood offense exploded Friday night helping the Panthers stay in the playoff picture with a 42-29 win at Crockett.

“The kids rose up tonight and I am proud of them,” Westwood head coach Kevin Anderson said.

Westwood (1-2, 4-4) still has to win its remaining two games against Fairfield and Palestine to make the playoffs.

“We took care of business tonight and we will move on to Fairfield next week,” Anderson said. “We can only take it one game at a time.”

The Westwood offense came into Friday night only scoring 28 points combined in the last two district games. But the Panthers scored early and often, as Westwood 425 yards, 25 first downs and was not forced to punt.

“Tonight we were able to get first downs and control the clock,” Westwood offensive coordinator Roger Mays said. “It is a testament to our offensive line, which I challenged them this week and they stepped up.”

Quarterback Tevin Watson rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 228 yards and a touchdown.

Cameron Shead, who missed last week due to an injury, scored twice in the second half and rushed for 84 yards as the Panthers topped 100 yards rushing for the first time in the last five games.

“Cameron added another dimension and helped open up Tevin to run the ball,” Anderson said. “Our offensive line also played a big part in our success.”

Westwood used nearly seven minutes off the clock on the opening drive. The Panthers converted on a fourth and 9 when Watson found Domanick Turner for a 9-yard gain. Later in the drive, Watson scored on a 7-yard keeper to give Westwood a 7-0 lead.

On the Panthers’ next drive, Watson connected for a 27-yard pass to Bryce Lyman on a long third-down conversion and later, it was Watson again scoring as he split a pair of defenders in the back field and ran in for an 11-yard touchdown to give Westwood a 14-0 lead.

“We have been struggling so much on offense lately that it was important for us to start early,” Mays said.

Crockett responded in the first half with a deep 40-yard touchdown pass from CJ Wheeler to Dominique Wheeler to cut the lead to 14-7. After forcing Westwood to turn the ball over on downs, Crockett again scored on a 16-yard run by Napoleon Dennis on fourth down to tie the game at 14-all with two minutes left in the first half.

But Westwood marched the ball down the field on three straight passes from Watson to Turner to set up first and goal. Two plays later, it was Watson to Turner again, this time on an 8-yard touchdown pass to give Westwood a 21-14 lead going into the half.

Westwood started the second half like the first, moving the ball down the field and an 11-play drive was finished off by Shead’s 2-yard run to give the Panthers’ a 28-14 lead.

After both teams traded interceptions, the Panther defense made a critical stop on fourth down at their own 33-yard line, stopping Crockett a yard short of the first down.

The Panthers proceeded to put the game when Shead broke free for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Panthers a 35-14 lead.

Crockett would score twice in the final five minutes, but it was not enough as Watson found the end zone one more time to seal the win.
