WESTWOOD JUNIOR HIGH

l Important Dates — Feb. 2-13, Valentine’s Day carnations and messages on sale by Student Council; Monday, girls basketball at Palestine; Tuesday, talent show at elementary campus; Thursday, boys basketball vs. Palestine at home), 5 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, girls basketball tournament in Lovelady; Friday, Solo & Ensemble contest for band at Nacogdoches High School.

l WJHS student wins spelling bee — Eighth grader student Kaulandrius Mosley won the Anderson County Spelling Bee held recently at  the Westwood Elementary Library. Kaulandrius will go on to compete at the Regional Spelling Bee March 21 in Dallas. The event will be televised on WFFA–TV Channel 8.

l New software helps students improve math and science skills — Westwood Junior High recently purchased a license for software called Study Island to help students improve their Math and Science skills.

This software is available to all students and is Internet based which will allow them to access the program from home. Math and Science are the subject areas available, but plans are in progress to add other areas such as Reading and Social Studies.

l Calendar of Events — Monday through Friday, Scholastic Book Fair; Wednesday, Group Pictures.



WESTWOOD PRIMARY

l Head Start — The Head Start classes studied G this week. They learned about gravity and goop and also had a visit from their Big Buddies from the Interact club. The girls read stories to them and they learned a little bit about their goals for the future. Thank you Big Buddies!

l Kindergarten — This week kindergarten students learned all about the letter Bb. They concluded their week by making homemade bread and butter.

l Second Grade — Second graders are excited about the Social Studies unit of Famous American Heroes. They are using technology as they explore many websites for biographies of various important people. The students are able to identify facts and read timelines as they keep their journals. The students also finished Valentine's Day cards to mail to Anderson County soldiers in Iraq. They wanted to share their love with the many men and women over seas.

Character Club — The following students were named as Character Club members for the week of Jan. 19 -23, because they demonstrated the character trait, 'Cultural Diversity': David Jones, Joselin Aguilar, Leslie Vigil, Christopher Harris, Dyllan Underwood, Miah O'Neal, Jorge Alfaro, Andres Rodriquez, Christian Dorsey, Myazia Carr, Seth Trimble, Dalton Books, Seth Lavorn, Josue Sanchez, Autumn Baublet, Cale Crowley, Shane Moser, Jessika Scruggs, Mason Vanderfifer, Chanelle Carr, Ernan Lopez, Jillianne, Oddstrcil, Felicity Lester

l Word from the Principal — St. Jude's Math-a-thon has begun! Students will be asking family members and friends for donations this week.

They will begin working the math problems either online or in their booklets. Please help us reach our goal of $10,000.00 to help support the research of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

If they reach their school wide goal, Mrs. Rutledge, the principal, will be dressing up as Hannah Montana and singing for the students. Who wants to miss this opportunity to help children and see Mrs. Rutledge perform?
