• District Champs! — The students, staff and faculty of Westwood Junior High School would like to extend their congratulations to the seventh-grade boys track team. The team recently competed in Madisonville on April 5 and ended their track season as the District champs.
The other junior high track teams also did well. The eighth-grade boys placed fifth while the seventh grade girls team, who competed at Westwood, took second and the eighth grade team placed third.
Coaches for the boys are Mike Ellerbe, T.J. Turner and Corey Ash. The girl’s coaches are Michelle Ives and Misty Parish.
Congratulations to all for your outstanding efforts!
• Career Investigations — Students in Corey Ash’s Career Investigations have been researching colleges/universities of choice for a project. One student, Cody Collins, interested in UT at Austin, built a model of the Tower. Another student, Alexis Poole, built a small scale model of the entire UT Tyler campus map. Tremendous job by both students in creativity while learning about what these two Universities have to offer them in the future. You can see these projects on the district’s Web site at http://classroom.westwoodisd.net/webs/cash/. Click on the link for “College Project”.
• Spring Dance — The WJHS Parent Support Group will be sponsoring a Spring Dance Friday in the school’s cafeteria. The dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. and will be for Westwood Junior High School students only. The price of admission will be $3 per person or $5 per couple. School dress code will be enforced. For more information, please contact the office at 903-723-0423 or Mrs. Macharoni at 903-723-2336.
• Vision and Hearing Screening — The nurse's at WISD have been screening the student's vision and hearing in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades. If a problem is found with this first screen, we will re-screen the student in two to three weeks. If a problem is found on the second screen, we will send a note home with the students informing the parent. The parent can take the student to his/her primary care physician or an eye doctor for further evaluation. We strive to get these exams done early in the year to hopefully, pick up on any problem the student may have that might hinder their learning.
