Please help the kids to remember, the sooner it's done the less they have to worry about it. If you have any questions please contact WJH Band Director Juan Rodriguez: e-mail: jrodriguez@westwoodisd.net, junior high, 903-723-0423;
• Message from the WJHS Nurse — If your child brought home a note or you received a phone call about shots, you will have until the end of September to get your child immunized. Please refer to page 3 under Immunization in the student handbook in which it states the student can be excluded from school if the student is not up to date on their immunizations. Goal is to keep all the students in school, so parents are urged to help in this matter.
Also, vision screening for the seventh grade and spinal screening for the eighth grade will take place on Wednesday.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
• Note from Mr. Howard — I am a new sixth-grade teacher and as far as I can tell we are off to a very good start. I have great interest from the students in Social Studies. We are trying to build a good understanding of the world we live in and where thing are located. The sixth-grade band and choir are also off to a good start. The band students began getting there instrument this week and are very excited and want to show their instrument to everyone. All of the 6th grade teachers are looking forward to a great year.
PRIMARY SCHOOL

• Wee Care Service Project — The Primary school is collecting new stuffed animals for a high school lifeskills service project called 'Wee Care.' These stuffed animals will be used by local law enforcement officials. If you would like to donate, please send brand new (adult hand-sized) stuffed animals with your child to the Primary campus. The collection bin is located in our office. We will be collecting these through Sep. 21.
• Goodies for Grandparents — We were so excited to have the over 120 grandparents and grand-friends join us for breakfast on Sep. 12. Thanks to everyone who came and to the cafeteria staff who so deliciously organized the event. This was an event enjoyed by all!
• Early Childhood/Pre-K News — The 2007-2008 school year is shaping up to be quite a busy year for the Early Childhood and Pre-K classes at Westwood Primary School. So far this year we have met 'Mr. N' and 'Ms. W' from the Letter People learning series. We have had a great time looking for objects that begin with these letters. Mrs. Perry's class has also been studying about dinosaurs. The Pre-K classes are beginning their "all about me" unit this week. We had a great time at “Goodies for Grandparents.” The students ate breakfast with their grandparents and had a fabulous time.
• Second-Grade News — All second grade is reading the story Ducky. Since we found out that a crate of rubber bathtub toys really fell overboard 15 years ago, we have emailed the reporter to contact us and anxiously await a reply.
One teacher has visited the island of Sitka, Alaska and hopes to contact them since that is the area that has located the most rubber duckies. We have duckies all over our desks as we study ducks, draw ducks falling overboard in the ocean, and research articles about this unusual event that occurred 15 years ago. We love reading the story and the articles! Second grade is also studying communities. We have discussed the meaning of the word community and participated in various activities surrounding our community.
