Queen, princess to be crowned during rodeo Saturday


The 2009 Dogwood Rodeo Queen and Princess will be crowned during the Dogwood Classic UPRA Rodeo on Saturday at the Anderson County Youth Livestock Riding & Roping Arena off of U.S. 287 North.

Competition was held April 11. Contestants were judged on horsemanship, modeling and attire and interview. Two additional categories — saddle drawing tickets and Miss Photogenic also will be judged for awards. However, they are not included in the final point total toward winning the crown.

Queen contestants include Taylor Mathis and Shelby Watson.

• Taylor Mathis — Taylor Mathis is the 14-year-old daughter of Val and Quida Mathis of Elkhart. She attends Elkhart Middle School where she is involved in UIL academic events. She is a member of the Rodeo Club, Elkhart-Slocum 4-H and FFA. She enjoys riding her horse Cowboy, roping and showing goats.

• Shelby Watson — Shelby Watson is the 18-year-old daughter of Denise Brewster and Jeff Watson of Elkhart. She is a senior at Elkhart High School and a member of NBHA. Her hobbies include “mudding” at the mud parks, hanging out with friends, and trimming and training horses. She also enjoys riding and training her horse Mercedez.

Princess contestants include Skyler Cutler and Miranda Steubing.

• Skyler Cutler — Skyler Culter is the 12-year-old daughter of Ben and Dana Cutler of Grapeland. She attends Slocum ISD, is a member of Ioni Creek 4-H and enjoys showing rabbits. Skyler also enjoys riding her horse Gypsy, playing basketball, softball and swimming.

• Miranda Steubing — Miranda Steubing is the 11-year-old daughter of Lucky and Angela Steubing of Elkhart. She attends Elkhart Elementary School. Her hobbies include hunting, softball, drawing and riding her horse Skeeter. She is a member of Elkhart-Slocum 4-H and the NBHA.
