From keeping the books to being the smiling face of Hibernia Bank’s drive-through window, Palestine resident Linda Dean knows the ins and outs of banking.

This week Dean will celebrate 30 years with the financial institution and is being honored by her fellow employees for her years of service which began Dec. 16, 1975 at what was then known as Royall National Bank.

“I began as a bookkeeper and worked my way up to senior commercial (drive-through) teller,” Dean said in an interview last week. “I also worked in purchasing — just any area they needed me.”

Dean said she has seen many changes in banking during her 30 years in the industry — primarily in the area of technology.

“We have gone from old-fashioned bookkeeping to doing everything on the computer,” she said. “It is all more modern — technology has changed everything.”

“Drive through banking has become more and more popular over the years,” she added. “People want to get in, get out and be gone.”

The greatest part of Dean’s 30 years at Hibernia Bank is the people in the community that she has come in contact with and gotten to know over the years.

“I took the job because of the many opportunities that are available in banking,” Dean said. “But I especially love the friendly people and employees — we are like one happy family.”

Although the thought of retirement does cross her mind at times, Dean said she has no plans to do so yet.

“They call her ‘Mother Linda,’” said friend and Hibernia branch manager Delores Guess about Dean. “She always makes sure everything and everyone is taken care of.

“You won’t find a more dedicated, hard working team player than Linda,” Guess added. “She always goes the extra mile.”

Dean came to Palestine from Corpus Christi in 1963 after marrying her husband, Harold, a Palestine native. The couple has two grown children and several grandchildren.

In their free time, the Deans spend every moment possible traveling the country in their fifth wheel. Their favorite destinations include Branson, Mo. and Lake Palestine.

Dean recently was honored by Hibernia Bank with the "Acrylic Jade Flame” award for 30 years of service. She will be honored locally with a reception from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Hibernia Bank’s Sycamore Street location. All friends and customers are welcome to attend.
