For the second year, Mindi Latham of Elkhart Elementary School was chosen by the Distinguished Youth of America organization as a state candidate for Distinguished Youth of Texas.

This program recognizes girls who rank high academically or who have been acknowledged publicly for their leadership abilities or accomplishments.

Latham has been chosen as one of the top students in the state. She attended the Scholarship and Recognition Program in Austin Nov. 25-27. The invitation-only event encourages scholastic endeavors and involvement in school and community activities.

Latham is the daughter of Gary and Peggy Marchant of Elkhart.

Palestine resident to perform at the White House

Matt Altman of Palestine is performing with The University of Texas at Tyler Patriot Singers at the White House in Washington, D.C. today as part of the White House Holiday Open House, President Rodney H. Mabry, announced.

Traditional, sacred and secular holiday favorites are being performed by the Patriot Singers in different areas of the White House for the general public and invited dignitaries.

UT Tyler’s three-year old musical ensemble was selected to perform after submitting audio and DVD tapes, a group resume and recommendations from Congressman Louis Gohmert and Ralph Hall and Senator John Cornyn.

Dr. Mark Johnson, UT Tyler assistant professor of music, serves as director of the Patriot Singers.
