A 40-year-old Florida man who led authorities on an almost 30-mile pursuit in July which ended near Jacksonville has been indicted by an Anderson County grand jury on a pair of charges, including evading arrest/detention with a motor vehicle.

Michael Wayne Poe, 40, of Freeport, Fla. also was indicted on the charge of possessing a prohibited weapon after leading authorities on a pursuit July 26 which began within the city limits of Palestine and concluded on U.S. 79, just inside the Jacksonville city limits, according to police.

The nearly 30-mile, 30-minute pursuit involving as many as 10 patrol units from various agencies ended when spikes were placed across the highway.

Poe, whom authorities say appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine or possibly PCP, stopped short of the spikes, but was eventually talked out of his Chevrolet pickup by a trained hostage investigator representing the Palestine Police Department.

No one was injured during the incident, but the suspect did throw out a .410-gauge shotgun with an illegally-sawed off barrel before exiting his vehicle, according to police.

Drugs and drug paraphernalia also were found in the man's vehicle, police have said.

Palestine police initially responded to a report of a possible intoxicated driver near the intersection of East Spring and North Sycamore streets during the mid-afternoon hours and attempted to pull over the driver — later identified as Poe — after they say the suspect was observed driving and behaving erratically.

Speeds during the pursuit reached as high as 90 miles per hour shortly after leaving Palestine, but mostly remained at or near the speed limit, according to Palestine Assistant Police Chief Brian Wharton.

At one time during the pursuit, police say Poe put his right forefinger to his temple, simulating a shooting motion.
