A 30-year-old Grapeland city councilman bonded out of the Houston County Jail Wednesday, one day after being arrested by state authorities on four counts of child pornography.

Aaron Wade Pennington, 30, of Grapeland was arrested Tuesday night at his Grapeland residence in the 600 block of North Market Street on two counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of possession of child pornography with intent to promote, according to Houston County sheriff’s officials.

Pennington’s arrest came after investigators with the cyber crimes unit of the Texas attorney general’s office obtained a warrant for his arrest signed by 349th State District Judge Pam Foster Fletcher.

Pennington is currently a member of the Grapeland City Council and has served as president of the Grapeland Chamber of Commerce.

A representative of the Houston County Sheriff’s Office told the Herald-Press that Pennington was released from the Houston County Jail in Crockett Wednesday afternoon after posting bonds totaling $100,000.

Houston County District Attorney Donna Gordon Kaspar said the public official will be prosecuted in the same manner as any citizen.

“It will be handled just like any other case,” Kaspar said Wednesday.

Lauri Stathoff, a spokesperson for the Texas attorney general’s office in Austin, did confirm that representatives of that agency’s cyber crimes unit arrested Pennington Tuesday.

“The case was referred to us by the Grapeland Police Department,” Stathoff said. “Our cyber crimes unit continues to investigate.”

The charges against Pennington are second-degree felonies punishable by two-to-20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
